November's FUNdraising events

Amid the bake sales, the meetings and learning Portuguese, we have several fabulous fundraising events coming up and we hope you can join!

Love Food? Check out these sumptuous events!

On Saturday, November 3, we will be hosting a Flap Jack Breakfast at Applebees. Essentially, how it works is each IMD: Brazil member sells tickets for the Breakfast at $5 each. Customers go to the  Applebees on Eubank and Lomas on the morning of November 3, between 8 and 10 am to get a giant, delicious flap jack for breakfast.

On Saturday, November 10, we will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner & Auction, bringing you delicious pasta at an affordable cost and for a worthy cause! We are still working out the details of when and where, but we'll be sure to let you know once we do.

The benefits of exercise!

On Saturday, November 17, we will be hosting our first run of the school year with a Thanksgiving theme - a 5K Turkey Trot. Thats right, get ready to dress up like a turkey and run! Tickets for adults will be $20 and $10 for children - all levels of runners are welcome (walkers too!). We are still finalizing the details on where it will take place, so keep checking back here!

Ever fancied learning a new dance? During the first or second week of November, we will be hosting our first Samba classes at Salsa Baby, located at 307 Central Avenue NW. Prices will be affordable for students, with professional instruction. What could be better than that?!

Full-on fun!

While you might not typically associate November with lounging by the pool, we want to change that! On November 17, we are going to host a pool party in the Olympic Pool at Johnson Gym, from 7 to 10pm. Everyone 18 and over is welcome, so bring your friends!

Get ready to get your fashion on! Sometime after the Thanksgiving break, IMD Brazil is going to have a fashion show! Be sure to show up in your cutest outfit.

That’s the some of events for November. We hope you’ll be able to join us for a few (or all!) of the fun!

In the meantime, everyone enjoy the Fall Break!

Você fala português? Do you speak Portuguese?

Aside from fundraising, we need to make sure we can connect with locals once we get to Brazil. A no-brainer right?

However, the majority of us don't speak a lick of Portuguese - which is where one of our advisors, Ojana comes in! A native Brazilian, she is helping us learn some Portuguese at the end of our weekly meetings. This will be a huge help once we get to Brazil - hopefully we can all get the hang of the basics before May!

Fancy learning some yourself? Check out these helpful phrases:

Como você se chama?/ Qual é o seu nome? - What is your name?

Eu me chamo Sarah/Meu nome é Sarah. - My name is Sarah.

Eu sou bonita - I am pretty.

Tu és chata - You are boring.

Ele/Ela/Você é inteligente - He/She/You are smart.

Nós somos preguiçosos - We are lazy.

Vós sois gentis - You are kind.

Eles são engraçados - They are funny.

Congratulations! You now know a little Portuguese!

IMD Brazil: Who we are

Welcome! We are the University of New Mexico's International Medical Delegation Brazil. So what does that mean?

In May of 2013, we will travel to Navegantes and Sao Paolo, Brazil to help provide medical aide and education to these communities.

Our Mission... The purpose of our organization is to provide medical aide to underdeveloped nations, expose undergraduate pre-health or socially minded student to international healthcare and poverty situations, to educate our community of international issues, and promote action to solve these problems.

We are working together with the nongovernmental organization Lions Club to develop further outreach programs, which will be implemented during our time in Brazil. A large part of our efforts are going to focus on providing free medical consultations and basic medicine to poverty stricken communities. Throughout our travels we will perform medical brigades, visit and donate supplies to orphanages, hospitals and a cancer center as well as visit centers for disabilities. Each day will be a new project and experience and each person will get the chance to participate.

Our group is made up of 24 students, both undergrad and graduate, from the University of New Mexico. While the majority of our members are studying different forms of medicine, this year students from different majors have been invited to join as well.

Our group!
Our goal is to raise $2,500 each to fund our trips. Interested in donating? Not only are you helping out Brazilians suffering from extreme poverty, your donation is tax deductible! Send us an email at brazilimd@gmail.com or get in touch with one of our members and we'll let you know how.
